On Wednesday 16 September, Voice for Victims Foundation will mark National Victims of Crime Day with our inaugural Climb Against Crime.

National Victims of Crime Day is an opportunity to recognise the people whose lives have been impacted by crime, acknowledge the often-difficult journey that follows, and remind victims that they are not forgotten.

This year, Voice for Victims wants to help elevate the significance of the day in Queensland.

Crime can happen to anyone, at any time. While we all hope for safer communities, the reality is that crime will still occur. When it does, victims deserve support, compassion and someone to walk beside them as they recover.

56 climbers. One cause.

On the morning of 16 September, 56 people will climb Brisbane’s iconic Story Bridge, standing together for victims of crime and raising funds to help Voice for Victims continue providing free, practical support and guidance to victims across Queensland.

At the heart of the climb are people with lived experience of crime, including Lee Lovell and his daughter Scarlett, Chris Sanders, Natalie Merlehan and Voice for Victims Co-Founder and Chair Ben Cannon.

They’ll be joined by business and community leaders and supporters, including a team from our Principal Partner, Crimsafe, and a team from Esuarve, which works with disadvantaged and at-risk young people, including programs aimed at helping young people avoid or break the cycle of involvement in crime.

Each climber is aiming to raise at least $500, with every dollar helping Voice for Victims provide practical assistance, guidance and ongoing support to victims as they navigate the aftermath of crime and begin to rebuild their lives. The campaign was established with a $500 minimum fundraising commitment for each participant.

Be part of the day

The morning will kick off from around 7am at the Story Bridge Adventure Climb Base Camp at Howard Smith Wharves. Our media partner 4BC will be broadcasting live, and members of the community are welcome to come along and encourage the climbers.

We’re grateful to Story Bridge Adventure Climb, which is providing all 56 climbs free of charge, and Mews at Crystalbrook Vincent, which will provide complimentary coffee for the climbers and 4BC crew.

Later that day, Brisbane landmarks, including the Story Bridge, will be illuminated yellow to recognise victims of crime and shine a light on their experiences.

Whether you climb, donate or simply take a moment to recognise National Victims of Crime Day, the message is the same: victims matter, and they should not have to navigate the aftermath of crime alone.
