On 20 August, Voice for Victims Foundation Chair and Co-Founder Ben Cannon appeared on A Current Affair, continuing his push to ensure the voices and experiences of victims are heard within Queensland’s justice system.

The story revisited the violent 2021 home invasion of Ben’s neighbours, former Wallaby Toutai Kefu and his family – the incident that ultimately led Ben on the path to establishing Voice for Victims.

Ben went to the family’s aid during the attack and experienced firsthand not only the immediate impact of violent crime, but the long and often difficult journey that can follow for victims.

Five years later, he continues to speak publicly about that experience and the need for a justice system that gives appropriate consideration to the people whose lives are changed by crime.

Speaking with A Current Affair, Ben again raised concerns about the sentences handed to the young offenders responsible for the attack and what those outcomes mean for victims who are left to live with the consequences long after a court matter is over.

For Voice for Victims, this has always been about more than any one case.

Our organisation grew from lived experience and a recognition that victims too often struggle to find their place within a complex justice and support system. While much has changed since 2021, there remains important work to be done to ensure victims are heard, considered and properly supported.

Ben’s continued advocacy is an important part of that work.

Since establishing as a charity in March this year, Voice for Victims has built on that advocacy by providing practical, frontline assistance to people affected by crime across Queensland – helping victims navigate what comes next and ensuring they do not have to face the aftermath of crime alone.

As we continue to grow, we will work with governments, agencies and the community to improve the way victims are supported and considered within our justice system – and continue to speak up when their experiences and voices need to be heard.
